An Interview with Dr. Mariana Andrade (BELNUC)

“This is the event I wish I had during my training

Mariana Andrade

Hi Mariana, you’re one of the organizers of the BELNUC Glamping Weekend and a key trainer during the weekend. What inspired you to create this event?

Honestly? This is the event I wish I had when I was a student or resident. During my training, I often felt like there was a missing piece – something that connected the dots between university education and real-world nuclear medicine practice. Sure, we learned the theory and practice, but what about professional and interpersonal skills, networking, and career development? That’s exactly what this event is about: giving students and young professionals a head start in their careers while creating an incredible sense of community.

What makes this event different from traditional conferences or courses?

First, it’s completely free: no registration fees, no hidden costs, just a weekend designed for students and residents. But what really sets it apart is the format. Instead of a sterile conference hall, we’re taking you to a beautiful glamping site in Durbuy. Imagine learning in this beautiful environment, brainstorming career paths over breakfast, and building real connections with peers and mentors in a relaxed setting. You won’t just be sitting through lectures – you’ll be actively participating in hands-on workshops, team activities, and discussions that actually prepare you for your future in nuclear medicine.

What can participants actually expect from the weekend?

Great question! This weekend is a carefully curated mix of hands-on skill-building, career development, and exciting discussions on the future of nuclear medicine. We’re covering three key areas: scientific writing & publishing, professional & soft skills, and artificial intelligence in nuclear medicine. And of course, it’s not all lectures: there are interactive workshops, discussions, and even adventure activities to make networking feel natural and fun.

Indeed, writing a paper sounds intimidating, especially for students. What will participants learn in the scientific writing sessions?

I totally get that! Writing a journal article can feel like a huge challenge, but we’re going to break it down step by step. We’ll cover how scientific publishing works (what editors and reviewers look for), how a journal article is structured, and how to craft an effective abstract (the most underestimated part of a paper!). Then, we put it into practice with an interactive “How to write an abstract” workshop. Participants will get hands-on experience and personalized tips to make their writing clearer and more impactful.

Artificial intelligence in nuclear medicine is a hot topic. What can participants expect from these sessions?

Artificial intelligence isn’t just hype, it’s already transforming nuclear medicine. But what does that actually mean for young professionals? We have two fantastic sessions that will be practical and demystify AI, helping students and residents see where they fit into this rapidly evolving landscape.

The weekend ends with a discussion on the future of nuclear medicine. Why is this important?

Because THEY are the future of nuclear medicine! This session will be an open discussion about where the field is heading, the challenges we face, and the opportunities young professionals should be aware of. It’s also a chance to ask questions, share ideas, and get advice from experienced nuclear medicine physicians.

It’s clear there’s a strong academic and professional focus, but what about the fun side of things?

Oh, don’t worry—this is NOT a boring meeting! 🎉 In between sessions, we’ve built in plenty of team-building and adventure activities. These activities are designed to help people relax, connect, and build friendships in a natural way.

Some students might hesitate to apply because they feel they don’t know enough about nuclear medicine yet. What would you say to them?

I totally understand that feeling, but trust me, you do NOT need to be an expert to join! We’ve actually planned an introductory webinar a few days before the event so that students can get familiar with the basics. Our goal isn’t to test your knowledge but to introduce you to the exciting world of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in a way that feels welcoming and supportive. This event is all about learning, exploring, and asking questions—so whether you’re a complete beginner or already a resident, you’ll find something valuable here.

For those now thinking, “I HAVE to be there,” what’s the next step?

Super simple! Just fill out the online application before 1 June 2025. We’ll ask for some basic details and a short motivation statement (max 250 words), so tell us why you’re excited to join. And don’t wait until the last minute! Medical students get priority until 1 May, and spots will fill up fast.

Any final words for students or residents who might be hesitant to apply?

If you’re unsure—just go for it! This event is designed to welcome everyone, whether you’re just starting to explore nuclear medicine or already deep into your residency. No prior experience needed. No pressure. Just a fantastic learning experience, great people, and a lot of fun. I cannot wait to meet you all and share this incredible weekend together. See you in Durbuy!
