RLTech and Nurse Academy Flanders – June 21, 2025 (recap)

We are happy to share with you that the first RLTech and Nurse Academy in Flanders on June 21st at Technopolis, Mechelen was a great success.

With over 70 participants—including technologists, nurses, and nuclear medicine physicians—from all over Flanders, the event created a dynamic space for learning, collaboration, and innovation.

Designed specifically for technologists and urology-oncology nurses involved (or soon to be involved) in treating prostate cancer patients with lutetium-177 based radioligand therapy (RLT), the academy aimed to accelerate the learning curve for this cutting-edge treatment.

A distinguished panel of experts, including Dr. Michiel Strijbos, Dr. Sofie Van Binnebeek, Greta Demets, and Steven Stienaers, provided valuable insights on:

  • Patient education
  • Radioprotection
  • The evolving roles of nurses and technologists before and during treatment

The event also highlighted the power of multidisciplinary collaboration, always keeping the patient experience at the heart of our efforts.

We are already looking forward to the next edition in the south at the end of this year!

Health Technology Assessment (HTA)

A health technology assessment (HTA) is an evidence-based scientific process that enables national authorities to assess the relative effectiveness of new or existing health technologies, including nuclear medicine applications such as PET/CT, (new) radiopharmaceuticals, radioligand therapies… It focuses in particular on the added value of a health technology compared to other new or existing technologies and plays a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare systems across the globe.
In Belgium, the landscape of HTA is shaped by both national needs and its integration into broader European health policies. With Belgium’s highly developed healthcare system, HTA is a vital tool in ensuring the sustainability of healthcare spending while maintaining quality patient outcomes. The country’s involvement in European HTA networks, like EUnetHTA, fosters collaboration in evaluating cross-border health technologies, ensuring that Belgium remains at the forefront of scientific and clinical advancements.

This year, the workshop is organised by SMD FOD Economie in partnership with SCK CEN (Belgian Nuclear Research Centre) and it will be held on May 24, 2024, from 9h00 to 17h00 at the Lakehouse of SCK CEN, Boeretang 200, Mol 2400, Belgium.

A visit of four laboratories related to dosimetry and radioactivity measurements will take place in the afternoon. The laboratory visit requires registration before 26 April 2024.

The poster session is open to presentations of experimental techniques, data acquisition, sensors, applications related to the leading topic of sustainability. If you would like to contribute with a poster please indicate it in the registration form.

The workshop will focus on the role of metrology in enabling sustainable development and the circular economy. It will feature presentations and discussions on how the Belgian network of national standards laboratories realize today’s references and what we are putting in place for tomorrow. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange knowledge with other stakeholders.

The draft workshop agenda is detailed here. You can register to the event through this link. Participation is free. Don’t forget to mention if you would like to visit the laboratories (registration deadline is 26 April 2024).

Description of the laboratories:

  • Laboratory for Nuclear Calibrations (LNK) The Laboratory for Nuclear Calibrations (LNK) provides accurate and consistent calibrations of dosemeters and irradiations of samples assuring the traceability of the measurements to the international standards. LNK is the Designated Institute (DI) for the metrology of ionising radiation in Belgium. It maintains and develops standards for metrology of ionizing radiations and contributes to the dissemination of the international standard units to the end users. LNK offers calibrations and irradiations with γ-rays, X-rays, neutrons (252Cf, Am-Be) and β-particles.  It also offers the calibration of ionisation chambers for radiotherapy (Farmer type chambers) and nuclear medicine (radionuclide calibrators) departments of hospitals. A new building dedicated only to LNK, with modern equipment is in use since 2021. https://www.sckcen.be/en/calibrations
  • Low-level Radioactivity Measurements laboratories (LRM) The Low-level Radioactivity Measurements laboratories employ advanced radiometric methods to analyze radioactivity, including gamma-ray spectrometry, alpha particle spectrometry, liquid scintillation counting, and gross alpha and beta counting utilizing ZnS and proportional counters. Additionally, we employ emanometry for precise determination of 222Rn and 226Ra at minimal levels in liquid samples. Equipped with cutting-edge sample dissolution and radiochemistry separation techniques, our laboratories ensure accurate analysis across various matrices. Most of our analyses hold ISO 17025 accreditation. Our services primarily focus on environmental radioactivity monitoring, radiotoxicological assessments, waste product and radioactive effluent analysis, NORM evaluation, as well as food, feed, and research project analyses. https://www.sckcen.be/en/LRM
  • Personal Dosimetry laboratory (DOS) Strengthened by our research group, the Dosimetry Laboratory (DOS) offers services for both SCK CEN and external companies like hospitals, veterinary practices, industrial companies,…. The laboratory is ISO 17025 accredited and approved by FANC as official dosimetry service. The services include the offer of personal dosimeters for the measurement of Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) for exposed workers as well as ring dosemeters, eye lens dosemeters and environmental dosemeters. Techniques in use are thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence as well as direct ion storage technology. https://www.sckcen.be/en/expertises/health/dosimetry
  • Anthropogammametry laboratory (AGM) is monitoring the internal contaminations by gamma-ray spectrometry. Workers are requested to be measured at a frequency depending on their activities and an associated risk analysis. Appropriate detectors (NaI and HPGe) installed in five dedicated low background measurement rooms form a unique infrastructure in Belgium for the direct measurement of internal contaminations. Whole Body Counting, Lung Counting or the measurement of thyroid activity is done in routine for SCK CEN as well as for external customers.

EANM Statement on iodine self-medication

Due to the current situation in Ukraine, many people are wondering whether the prophylactic intake of iodine preparations can be beneficial in the event of a nuclear incident. The answer to this question is definitely NO. The potential harm to the thyroid is by far exceeding any theoretical benefit. Additionally, to date, there is no evidence of an increase in radiation levels in Europe.

European Course on Lymphatic Imagings In the Management of (Lymph)Edemas and Benign Lymphatic Pathologies – COURSE 2021 GOES VIRTUAL!

European Course on Lymphatic Imagings In the Management of (Lymph)Edemas and Benign Lymphatic Pathologies

COURSE 2021 GOES VIRTUAL!

Dear colleagues,

Many things have changed since COVID-19 entered our lives, but one stubborn fact has remained the same: large, in-person gatherings are a public health risk. While we are all hoping for a breakthrough against the pandemic soon, public health officials are telling us it could be another year or more before we can safely go back to in-person meetings.

So today, I wish to inform you that the course will be hold entirely online.

Course goals:

In a context in which the quality requirement in health care is becoming more and more prevalent (with, for instance, a requirement for a minimum number of patients treated for recognition in certain areas, “health care providers quality law” approved and to enter in Belgium into practice in 2021, …), it therefore seems justified if not necessary to introduce training-teaching the different imagings of the lymphatic system (Lymphoscintigraphies, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance lymphangiographies, Lympho-Fluoroscopies and others) used in the management of (lymh)edemas (and other benign lymphatic pathologies), not only theoretical but also and above all practical (diagnoses integrated in the clinic and with well understood therapeutic purposes) with expert guidance, ultimately leading to the creation of network (national and European) of exchanges of experience which also advances the body of knowledge of these lymphatic pathologies.

With delivery of Certificate of Basic and Practical Competences in Lymphatic Imaging

By the ULB Faculty of Medicine.

The certificate of “Basic” Competences in Lymphatic Imagings will also be issued by the BeSL and ESL (at the end of the 1rst course and the certificate of “Practical” Competences in Lymphatic Imagings during the ESL(/ISL) meeting in Athens (21-24/09/2021) after evaluation of the participants’ “on site” practices, their presentation of one personal work and after one last exam.

Training will include: – A contextualization of these imagings to the useful anatomical and physio-pathological data of the lymphatic system, to the clinical data of the benign pathologies for which they are prescribed, to the expectations and uses of the prescribers, – Development of methodologies in application, – Making recommendations on their achievements (from tracers to reports), – During two days, the presentation of cases-series of these imagings in their clinical context with their therapeutic implications, – Meeting of European and international experts on these topics, – The “live” case discussion with various Belgian practitioners, – Participation in the annual scientific meeting of the BeSL, an opportunity to meet the actors of the “land-region”.

Target audiences:

1) Doctors specializing in imagery (“nuclearists” and radiologists) facing these examinations as part of their specialty

2) Physicians and surgeons users of these images

3) General doctors and specialists (angeologists, phlebologists, cardio-vascular doctors, oncologists, …) prescribers of these imageries

4) Physiotherapists

People who wish to register for this course are invited to send to Prof P Bourgeois (pierre.bourgeois@erasme.ulb.ac.be):

  • a short CV with (important) the description of their activities,
  • a letter of intent,
  • a short letter explaining their interest regarding Lymphology (and the investigations of lymphatic pathologies) and (important) their expectations for this course.
Recognized full time practitioner: 1500 Euros
Trainee:  950 Euros

TO REGISTER, USE THE LINK: https://www.ulb.be/fr/programme/fc-724#admission

550 Euros will be reimbursed to the first ten non-Belgian registrants (registered before the 1/04/2021) by the Foundation For Lymphology upon/after receipt of their final certificate (during the meeting of the International Society of Lymphology in Athens).

EANM Apprenticeship Project – Paediatrics Committee

The EANM Paediatrics Committee is launching a “Paediatric Nuclear Medicine Apprenticeship Project” that is intended to foster and promote, early career NM physicians interested in paediatric nuclear medicine, providing them with an opportunity to become involved in the committee activities and to learn from the experts with the expectation that these individuals may become future leaders in this field.

This is a 2 year programme. The selected individual will be expected to participate in all committee activities as an observer (spring and congress meetings, teleconferences, special projects etc.).

The EANM will provide support travel and accommodation expenses related to the spring meeting in the framework of a predefined budget (details coming from the EANM Office).

The apprentice will conduct a research project in the field of paediatric nuclear medicine. The study must be completed during the term of the apprenticeship. The EANM will not provide a budget to conduct this study. Given these considerations a retrospective study appears to be the most suitable option. The apprentice is expected to present the study results at the EANM congress that marks the end of the programme.

One or two Paediatrics Committee members will be assigned as mentors to assist the apprentice at the various stages of the study and in any other committee related mission he/she is involved in.

The selected applicant will be required to provide quarterly written reports on his/her progress to the Chair of the Paediatrics Committee who will inform the EANM Board.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Nuclear Medicine Physicians practicing at least 3 years
  • Exposure to paediatric nuclear medicine and preferably some experience in the field
  • Age: 38 year or under (at the time of the start of the apprenticeship)
  • Proficiency in English
  • EANM membership

Candidates will need to provide

  • A personal motivation letter
  • A support letter from the department chief
  • CV

Applicant’s data will be reviewed by the members of the EANM Paediatrics committee. Top applicant/s will be interviewed by the committee chair.

Application deadline is set with June 30, 2019

The final selection of the candidate will happen in September 2019, with the programme starting in October 2019.

Please send applications to : Ms Silvia Marchetti, EANM Executive Office, s.marchetti@eanm.org

In memoriam Prof. Dr. Michel De Roo

With great sadness we inform you of the passing away of em. Prof. Dr. Michel De Roo on 13th February 2019.

Michel De Roo was born in Leuven on 18th March 1931. In 1955 he obtained his doctorate in medicine. During his studies he came into contact with radiobiology in the context of radiation therapy and radiology.

In 1961 he obtained a degree in radiology and shortly after in radiotherapy.

Under his impulse, the use of radioactive tracers for diagnosis and therapy increased considerably, creating within the radiotherapy department a subunit of nuclear medicine that became a separate department from 1968 onwards.

Prof. dr. Michel De Roo was appointed as head of this new department and as professor at the faculty of medicine in 1977 with teaching in radiological anatomy, radiotoxicology, principles and applications of radioimmunology and the use of isotopesin vitro.

He set up the European Board of Nuclear Medicine and he trained 41 specialists in nuclear medicine.

Michel De Roo was nationally and internationally respected as one of the founding fathers of nuclear medicine in Belgium and has always worked for the development of the specialty of nuclear medicine and the harmonization of training schemes within Europe.

He was chairman of the Recognition Committee for Specialists in nuclear medicine, chairman of the Belgian Association for Nuclear Medicine, conference president of the European Congress of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) in 1995 and held various board positions in scientific societies.

After ending his career at the university, he spent his early years of retirement writing a book on the history of nuclear medicine in Europe.

He was known as a professional and passionate expert, but also as a bon vivant with a warm personality, available to his employees and a fine doctor who always sought cooperation with colleagues.

He was delighted to be able to experience the 50th anniversary of the department of nuclear medicine that he founded and led for 28 years and to find that under the direction of Prof. Dr. K. Van Laere, new and challenging research paths are being followed.

In gratitude,

the BELNUC Board
